This chairs were shown in Milan last week, made by Fredrik Farg of Sweden they evidently are salvaged chairs that got new dresses for their birthday. I love the impulse of this project. The beginnings of the chairs for LBC are from a feeling I got in the thrift stores around here and that there are millions of chairs in the world why make more...sorry Furniture Fairs of the world but at least some people are thinking this way and making things elegant.
This is a more provocative image than I am used to but I was of course attracted to the chairs but this image was shot by Annie Leibovitz and one does not crop a Leibovitz photograph. The chairs are Wangechi Mutu's "Thrones" a beautiful extension of her college work. Ah nice to see her extending her family........
Mr. Pommer has e-mailed to add to the collection of work involving a 'chair tumble". This is from artist Karen Ryan and this piece is entitled "In the Woods". See www.bykarenryan.co.uk for more work
So you remember how I have been showing a series of work with artist using chairs in "chair-messes". Well I have found an artist that is truly a chair virtuoso..... Marc Andre Robinson's work has gone from your run of the mill chair mess genre guy to a skilled master of chair sculpture discipline. See this great
New York Times piece about his work.
You must indulge in one more images of a chair collision. This "chair-mess" is an image from emma's blog and massproduction installation at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. Is this a hidden frustration with chair thing or a celebrate multiple chairs thing??????
My friend Mr. Pommer sent me this image of Ai Weiwei's piece Grapes. This is part of his series where he takes Ming and Qing Dynasty furniture and re-configures them in "un-real" conditions. This work will be on display at Phillips Depury in London this month, the exhibition is called Four Movements. Now I want to go to London.
I have not posted a single Dutchman's work for two weeks and was feeling really good about my diet when my buddy at Yatzer brought up the opening of a Droog design store in NYC. It opened in February and evidently has all the classics as well as up and coming designers. Okay, now I need a trip to New York.....
If I were in New York this week I would run not walk to see Alejandra Laviada's photographs at Danziger Projects. She calls these "photo sculptures". Check out the Typology section of her web site and you will see why she is my visual friend.
This is image made the blog rounds a couple of months ago and it might have been the beginning of the "chairs and buildings" idea-it certainly says it all in this image. The work is by Columbian sculptor Doris Salcedo and her work seems to be about the politics of objects?
I am going to do more research on her; first step, look under artists www.whitecube.com
