Life building downstairs

As I get settled into Mississippi Life from Maine Life-I thought I would share with the curious the Pearl Street House. Not quite finished but we had a good three weeks. These videos are a decidedly un-shelter magazine ready peek but I will use it this year to work long distance to finish the project up....so not everything thing in life is picture perfect. Red looks good on you..........belfast

There is something about the light in Maine that makes any hue of red, orange(think daylilies everywhere), rose look amazing-we could work with this idea in the interiors of Pearl Street?

Pearl Street progress

Drum Roll please- these are snaps of Pearl Street-if the plumber arrives today then we will be in tonight! The sinks,tile fixtures,doors are all things within arms length...ie in the barn and left over from jobs-its looking pretty cool.

Building us

We are gearing up for our movements toward New England in a couple of weeks. I was thinking about the interiors of the Pearl Street house and thought that it would be great to have most of the furniture be by me...The architect Turner Brooks installs mostly his furniture-takes on Adirondack chairs, toys that he has made for his kids and giant models of projects.....Brooks is a real architect's architect and a joy to move through the New England landscape with him...

building pattern 3-tips of the trade

Part of my interest in pattern this week is the time has come to think about things like that for the Pearl Street project. But guess what no money left. So I will officially forgo my 'want' of true Scandinavian prints and look at the wonderful world of Ikea fabrics. You can not beat the price 8.99 to 5.99 per yard. Cautionary note: these fabrics are made of good quality cotton duck cloth so they are fine for drapery and light use areas-probably not good for sofas and dining chairs. Scandinavian pillow cases here I come.......

Clear building

Caleb just got back from a site visit in Maine. I am really happy with the simplicity of the front and back facades.....NOW I will work on the inside.

Building anew......

Good Morning! As you can see I am cleaning house in Blog world as well as my desk at 305 Greensboro. I am generally excited about the work ahead this winter and spring. On the To Do list is a talk establishing the future of interior design, finish Julia Grant's furniture that I am designing along with a chaise that maps General Grants military movements, a triangular bathroom across from the BQE, two talks about Little Building Cafe and entrepreneurial activism, a love seat for Madam X, teach three classes, some dance recitals and middle school version of Into the Woods for Mad and a book? And this little project; a little building in Belfast Maine, you saw it this summer and its come along way, we are on schedule and it got closed up before xmas-now some designing on the inside. Let's get going.

In general I am always on the look out for "un-kitchens" no "built in's", no locked quality....here is an nice example in a Dwell magazine project by Buenos Aires architect Alejandro Sticotti.

Simple Building

We basically have to have all the building decisions done before we head back to Mississippi in two weeks. I hate working like this and feel like projects should grow. But I will really on 20 years of experience to push through. The only project I have ever envied was the Marfa home of Liz Lambert. I feel like it is what is type of space. The first images I saw of the space from House and garden were much stricter, so I am glad to see that the home part of her project has kicked in.

Building alot.....

Well we are in Belfast and this is the Pearl Street project. Adorable 1800 town house.....and then Caleb felt we should re-do the foundation. So its jacked up and the concrete has been poured, the foundation wall will get built in the next week or so and maybe floors before we leave.

Building the fantastic

Okay, I admit it I have the "I wants". These amazing ceramic tiles by Ashville artist Heather Knight caught my eye this weekend and I am hooked....... I like the idea of a don't touch part of the bath and such a surprise coming out of a field of dumpy subway tile.......

How function is built.

The most beloved functional pottery for me is the work from Bennington Potters in Vermont. Started in 1949 work out of the Potters Yard has been a staple of all good new england modernist households. The white series is the group to covet.

Furniture from a landscape

I am gingerly trying to develop a palette for the Maine project-don't want to get too excited as it sounds like the roof is coming off and the floor is getting jacked up so we are a long way from rugs and lights. But I keep coming up with this image of Sam Maloof's work and its beautiful take on American furniture and craft. Not that a Maloof piece is in my future but the directness, elegance and rigor...that's my interest.

The Kindness Rug

You know that you are doing things right in life when your students become friends and very talented friends at that. Mary Chan was a student at Parsons and has since opened her own studio Studio Bartleby. She sent me word that she is doing a lot of textile work and is producing bespoke hand knitted rugs. Does the Maine project NEED one? We shall see.
