Red looks good on you..........belfast

There is something about the light in Maine that makes any hue of red, orange(think daylilies everywhere), rose look amazing-we could work with this idea in the interiors of Pearl Street?

Building Color too........

I have had this terrific image of Hope Ginsberg's work at this summer's Maker's Mart in Queens for ages. Take a look at her work, felt intertwines with community and other visuals......craft matches on.

Building lots of color

I am very much reacting to my moody hip hotel in NYC....lights too low as was furniture and mood. I found these images as an antidote. respectively-roche bobois Mah_Jong sofa, Diana Fayt ceramics, and Christien Meindertsma poufs.....

The Color of Space-Blue

In my research on rooms of one color I came about The Blue Room at the White house. The advent of the room is interesting George Washington re-worked the room with a bow front in order to make an elliptical shape room for receptions referred to as levees. The guest would circle around the president in a receiving line and therefore no one was pushed to a corner and all the guest were equal distance from the president-a most democratic shape. The blue color is a tradition and probably comes out of the simple fact that in a large home its easy to distinguish places by their colors, hence blue rooms and yellow parlors. I posted the blue room through the administrations because its an amazing walk through interior design history.

Color of Space 2

No conversation about the power of color in interior design goes without mentioning Diana Vreeland's Red Garden Room. Her hope for this space was that "I want this place to look like a garden, but a garden in hell."
And in researching this room I found out that Dorothy Parker also had a room in her apartment that was nine different shades of red.... I got to find a picture of that room.......

Color of Space 1

Another goal for weekly posts is to share some thinking that I have been doing for years about color. At Parsons I taught a class called the Color of Space which discussed the critical thinking behind the choice of color though out history. Each week I hope to bring forth a space that illustrates the concept that the color was a primary consideration to the architecture not an afterthought. The first example is George Washington's house Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon is one of the most important historical color analysis in the country. The stories of Mr Washington's involvement are fascinating. The during first renovation to the house Washington requested the very current Prussian Blue. It was very fashionable but very few people could handle it with expertise and Washington was forever disappointed with the streaky, modeled results in his small dining room. Years later, during the next renovation he choose the verdigris green. He was obviously looking for a similar result as the Prussian Blue and look to the color green to "calm the eye". Its fascinating that almost all of the house has color themes of the verdigris green and Mr. Washington worked so hard to perfect it.

White Rooms

This Esther Stocker installation has got me thinking about all white rooms. I added a Louise Nevelson wall and this room from Douglas Copeland's Canada Project.

Maine Red

Honestly vacations are a brain softener for me. I try to keep my design edge but I benefit most from just using the time to see with no agenda...it sounds strange but seeing is kind of my job. This week has been a lot of family time, eating (the organic and local Maine produce is the best) and for some reason the few pictures that I have taken are these images where the orange, crimson, red family is prominate. Summer time is Maine
